Whitehead Fellows Selection Process

Candidates cannot directly apply to become Whitehead Fellows. They must be nominated by their research advisor, mentor, or other distinguished scientist from the applicant’s field or institution. This nomination takes the form of a letter, in either email or hard-copy form. Two additional letters of support by persons familiar with the candidate’s research and academic accomplishments also should be emailed to fellowsprogram@wi.mit.edu or forwarded to:

Whitehead Fellows Program
Office of the Director
Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research
455 Main Street
Cambridge, MA 02142

Positions open on a revolving basis; there is no application or admission deadline. Nominations of truly exceptional individuals are always welcome.

At Whitehead Institute, we believe that researchers with a variety of lived experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds drive innovation and make our science stronger. We especially welcome nominations of scientists from historically underrepresented communities.

Questions about the program or the application/selection process should be directed to fellowsprogram@wi.mit.edu.
