Whitehead Institute mourns the loss of James Scheuer

The Whitehead Institute community is saddened by the passing of our longtime friend James Scheuer, MD.

Jim and his wife Ruth were members of Whitehead Institute’s Board of Associates for nearly two decades. With Ruth, Jim was an engaged supporter of the Institute’s people and research programs, consistently providing philanthropic contributions and regularly serving as an advocate for its mission of biomedical discovery.

Jim was a highly respected physician, teacher, and mentor who, since 1972, served Albert Einstein College of Medicine as a professor, director of cardiology, chair of the department of medicine, and chair emeritus. He was widely recognized as an outstanding researcher and academic leader who helped build the clinical and research foundation for Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care. And, with Ruth, Jim was a deeply engaged philanthropist, supporting a wide range of health, research, education, and community service organizations.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ruth, their three children, and their grandchildren.
