The Whitehead Community mourns the recent passing of our friend and ardent supporter, Arthur Brill.

Whitehead Institute would not be what it is today had it not been for Arthur’s early and longstanding involvement with the Institute. He leaves a lasting legacy that is central to the Institute’s history. Arthur worked closely with Jack Whitehead in conceiving and implementing the creation of a world-class biomedical research institute. He was the primary drafter of the Institute’s founding documents, and served as Secretary of the Institute from its founding and joined the board of directors in 2007. Throughout the years, Arthur lent the Institute community his passion, wisdom, and expertise, and honored it with his deep commitment to—and sincere respect for—its mission.

Arthur and his wife Carol were stalwart supporters of the Institute through their continuing philanthropy. They established the Jerome and Florence Brill Memorial Fund, in memory of Arthur’s parents, as well as a fund to support research in Sex Differences in Health and Disease, and they made countless additional gifts to support ongoing research.

Arthur was one of Whitehead Institute’s greatest supporters: a strong advocate, fiercely dedicated to basic scientific research, as well as a constant and dedicated presence at board meetings and events.  The Whitehead Institute community will miss him deeply, and offers Carol and the entire Brill family most heartfelt condolences.
