John J. Whitehead

John Whitehead graduated from Williams College with a double major in chemistry and biology and a minor in math. After two years of work towards a PhD in biochemistry at Case Western Reserve, he joined Technicon Corporation, a pioneer in laboratory automation. Until his retirement in 1986, Whitehead held a series of increasingly senior jobs at Technicon. He then acquired TDS Healthcare Systems Corporation, a hospital information systems company, and served as its president, chairman, and CEO until he sold the company in 1993. Whitehead has served on the boards of several biotech companies, as well as the boards of a number of not-for-profits -- including educational, research, community development, healthcare, and healthcare advocacy organizations. From 1998 to 2005, he was founder and chairman of Campaign for Medical Research, which spearheaded the effort to double funding for NIH during that period. Whitehead is a lifetime member of the Institute board; he currently serves on the Development Committee and formerly served on the Finance, Investment, and Nominating Committees.
