The Whitehead Institute community fondly remembers Margaret Sand

The Whitehead Institute community mourns the loss of Margaret Sand (1938-2025), our former Assistant Director for Administration. Margaret was Whitehead Institute’s first HR member and hired the Institute’s first employees. Throughout her long tenure, from 1982 until her retirement in 2005, Margaret ensured that all employees were treated fairly and supported in their careers. She worked closely with Whitehead’s postdocs to make sure their voices were heard by the administration. Her efforts helped make the Institute a great place to work, so that it continued to attract the strongest talent. After retiring, Margaret remained a steadfast supporter of the Institute. 

We offer our sincere condolences to Margaret’s family and loved ones. An informal Memorial gathering for Margaret will be held at the Weston Art & Innovation Center on November 22, 2025, from 4-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research or your local food pantry. More information can be found here.
