The 2011-2012 Whitehead Seminar Series for High School Teachers: Advances in Cancer Biology and Therapeutics

Teacher Program Schedule

"Thank you for this program! It helps me present cutting edge research to my students in an understandable and interesting way."

-- 2010-2011 Teacher Participant

Registration is now closed.

Cancer is a complex set of diseases associated with extreme morbidity and mortality. The National Institutes of Health estimates that in 2010, the direct and indirect costs of cancer in the United States totaled more than $260 billion. Given the staggering personal and economic toll cancer exacts on us all, it’s not surprising that enormous resources are dedicated to the quest for discoveries that will not only enhance our understanding of this constellation of diseases but also lead to breakthroughs in prevention, detection, and treatment.

Whitehead Institute’s 2011-2012 Lecture Series for High School Teachers, Advances in Cancer Biology and Therapeutics, will explore how novel research and development efforts are changing the way we as a society think about cancer now and how we might address it in the future.

The first seminar of the 2011-2012 season will be held on Monday, October 3 in Whitehead’s McGovern Auditorium. Each session begins promptly at 4:15 pm and includes a lecture and working dinner, typically ending by 6:30 pm.

We also match interested teachers with Whitehead partners—young Whitehead scientists who serve as a resource during the school year. Partners are eager to answer questions, discuss their fields of expertise, and even visit schools to meet with students. Teachers who have taken advantage of these partnerships in past years have found them to be invaluable relationships.

Participating teachers may be eligible to earn up to 27 Professional Development Points toward recertification.
